Tongass Homework Policy
APC Approved June 15th, 2015
Homework is one tool used by teachers to check and monitor student’s academic progress. If a student begins to fall behind academically, the teacher will contact the parent to discuss ways to support the student and to develop a plan. The teacher will give the student homework to provide extra practice, and to further strengthen skills. The homework may be finished at home, or through our after-school homework tutoring program.
First through Sixth Grades will spend a maximum of ten minutes per grade on homework.
• Grade 1: 10 minutes
• Grade 2: 20 minutes
• Grade 3: 30 minutes
• Grade 4: 40 minutes
• Grade 5: 50 minutes
• Grade 6: 60 minutes
Homework will include:
• Reading, completed daily Monday-Thursday
• Math, completed daily Monday-Thursday
• Additional activities/projects as assigned by the teaching team.
*PreK/Kindergarten will utilize a monthly activity calendar
– There will be no spelling homework as Words Their Way spelling activities will be completed as part of literacy centers in class. Words Their Way was adopted by the APC as the school-wide spelling program on 08-04-14.
– Study Hall will not be used to complete missing weekly homework.
– Teachers will inform parents about our homework policy. The administrator will inform parents about our homework policy and the Homework Club through the news note.
Homework Help
– Tongass School offers a daily after-school homework tutoring session from 4:00 to 5:00, Monday through Thursday.
– Teachers will notify the Homework Club paraprofessional of which students will participate in this program.
– The homework club staff member is responsible for maintaining an attendance record for students enrolled in the homework program. The paraprofessional will regularly communicate with the teacher regarding student attendance or questions regarding assignments. The classroom teacher will provide the homework club staff member access to weekly homework as needed to support student achievement of weekly homework assignments.
